Writing Feedback Hub

Formative AI feedback on student writing — guidance, not generation

An AI-powered companion for university students that reviews draft assignments and returns annotated feedback on structure, language, sources, and critical thinking — pointing out issues and asking reflective questions, never rewriting the work.

Purpose

Give students timely, actionable feedback on their writing while they're still drafting — strengthening academic skills without crossing the line into doing the work for them.

Who it helps

Undergraduate and postgraduate students across disciplines, plus the academic staff who want their cohort to arrive at submission with stronger drafts.

What it does

  • Highlights issues directly inside the draft and attaches inline annotations to each one
  • Pairs the inline annotations with a structured overall feedback summary
  • Reviews structure, argument, language, referencing, and critical thinking
  • Asks reflective Socratic questions instead of supplying answers
  • Flags weak evidence, unsupported claims, and unclear reasoning
  • Highlights tone, clarity, and academic-voice issues without rewriting
  • Tracks revisions across drafts so improvement is visible

How it's delivered

Writing Feedback Hub is a hosted web application. Students log in, paste or upload their draft — and optionally upload the task description or assignment brief — then receive feedback in the browser. No setup, no install. Uploading the task description means feedback is aligned to the actual assessment, not generic writing advice. The app is built on a modern web stack with AI calls routed through a hardened backend, so prompts, models, and safety rules can be updated centrally without touching the user experience.

Pedagogical foundations

Designed around formative assessment, scaffolding, and self-regulated learning. The system is explicitly tuned to coach rather than complete — guidance, not generation. Every response strengthens the student's capability instead of replacing it.

What makes it different

  • Built in collaboration with academic staff to align with rubrics and integrity standards
  • Returns structured feedback categories that map to assessment criteria
  • Refuses to rewrite, summarise, or generate text on the student's behalf
  • Optimised for fast turnaround so students can iterate while still drafting

Impact

  • A cost-effective alternative to platforms like Studiosity — comparable feedback at a fraction of the per-student cost
  • Stronger first drafts and reduced revision burden on academic staff
  • Higher student confidence in tackling complex writing tasks
  • Visible improvement in writing capability across multiple assignments
  • AI-safe by design — aligned with academic-integrity policies
